Week 4: Multimedia Resources for Teaching

Please locate a multimedia resource that you believe would be useful for teaching.  Post the address for the resource and discuss how you might use it in a lesson.

  1. Multimedia is a vast resource to use in the classroom. It gives the students and teacher different paths to explore. I believe NeoK12 would be great in my classroom. This multimedia resource is educationally based, and I can use this for any aspect of a lesson no matter what I am teaching. This resource covers math, all sciences, English, history (social studies), and other extra fun activities. I would utilize this multimedia resource in a lesson by letting students do warm-ups before the actual lesson. The video and quiz would get them ready for what is coming and how to approach the assignment. Videos and quizzes would be used before my lessons. After the video and quiz, I would go over how to do the subject I am doing my lesson for that day. This website is perfect for grade levels kindergarten all the way to twelfth grade.

    1. Children will enjoy this site because they can take enjoyment in watching the videos and playing the games that go along with them. Many of the games and puzzles would be perfect for using with an interactive whiteboard. Parents can use other games and activities to engage children and encourage learning. Whatever subject or topic you are looking to teach, you are sure to find it at Neo K12. It is a great site for kids of all age.

  2. Week 4: Multimedia Resources for Teaching
    As my multimedia resource, I have chosen a Schoolhouse Rock video titled, “Tea Party- No More Kings”. This video would be very helpful in a fourth grade social studies lesson. It touches on a few objectives found in the following standard: “SS4H1 Explain the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution”. This video discusses some of the events that led to the revolutionary movement in America, including “no taxation without representation”, the 1765 Stamp Act, and the Boston Tea Party. I remember watching the Schoolhouse Rock videos all throughout school. These educational videos instilled a lot of useful information in my mind. I hope students will remember these long after they are out of my classroom as well!

  3. I've been exploring some multimedia websites because at my job, we love to share ideas of new web sites and explore and find what works best for us. This website called "Wixie" is being used in Baltimore and first graders are becoming a professional at technology by using this in their class. It lets you take a look at all of the ways the first graders use this site with math, science, fieldtrips, writing paragraphs, and even creating their own web safety rules. I think this would be great in any classroom because it lets the students work individually and in groups and stores their work in cloud so the students work can be viewed and saved to build upon.   4. The multimedia resource that I believe would be useful for teaching is the I-Ready software for the classroom.   5. The multimedia resource that I think I would use in the classroom is Khan Academy. This has thousands of videos that discuss material on multiple different courses. On this website, you could basically find informational videos on any subject. In addition, there are many practice exercises available on this website. This will be beneficial to my music classroom, and it will be a great resource for other academic subjects. We would use this at my high school, and it would be very helpful and informative in my learning.

      Khan Academy is also one of my favorite sources for multimedia. Several of the educators I work with have used this in the past and the videos are extremely helpful. Not only are the videos educational they can often times be humorous, and most kids love to laugh. The Khan Academy breaks each subject down by grade level or content. For example under the Math section you have Early Math, Algebra 1, Arithmetic and so on.
      The resources are also free and that is always a plus!

  6. The multimedia resource that I would incorporate into my classroom instruction is Curriki. This website is an online community of educators and learners worldwide. It provides teachers with an online educational resource library that contains lessons, e-books, audio, assessments, photographs, worksheets, quizzes, videos, projects, and more that are created by other educators. All the materials provided are peer-reviewed and classroom tested. There is an endless supply of educational material that can be found on every subject, grade level, or by teaching standard that empowers learning including full courses to individual instructional videos or games. This open library of digital learning resources enables educators to create, modify, and choose their own teaching content that helps them engage their students more deeply in their own learning. Curriki can be plugged into a school district’s Learning Management System and used to teach any desired lesson. Students are able to browse the research library with key words, questions, or subject matter to find materials that are useful in their studying. Parents or homeschoolers can use Curriki to easily find homework to assist their children in learning. Curriki encourages collaboration of diverse learning experiences from around the world. Students and teachers are able to communicate on the website through Curriki Groups about curriculum. Members are able to collaborate about curriculum development, share ideas, and provide support for one another.

    I would use Curriki to research materials that are in the grade level and subject matter that I would be teaching the lesson on. I would integrate some of the many digital resources that are available on this website to enhance my lesson, such as worksheets, interactive games, and videos. After I taught the lesson while utilizing these educational materials, I would then have the students take quizzes or assessments obtained from Curriki in order to see what they have learned from the lesson. I could even assign a project from Curriki instead of an assessment to improve student learning and engagement. I would also show my students on a SMART board how they can benefit from using Curriki as a study tool for different subjects. There are many ways that educators and students could benefit from the implementation of the educational multimedia resources that are offered on Curriki.

  7. The multimedia resource that I believe is great for teaching is PBS Learning Media. This resource is great for students and teachers. The resources are aligned with the common core and national standards, they have video clips, images, audio clips, and interactive lessons. Also there are opportunities to differentiated the lesson/program to suit the needs of the learner. Students must be at least 13yrs old however to access this site on your own. Parents can work closely with their parents and teachers. Subject areas, and grade levels can be specified, then a variety of options become available for the learner. Teachers can track the frequency that students use the program if necessary, and extensions of the classroom learning can be shared at home. Standards can be selected first and then the aligned with the programs and lessons that are readily available. There is also a summer learning component, that is informal, interactive, and helps students avoid the summer slide!

The National Science Digital Library is a multimedia resource that enables students and educators to find free activities based on educational level (preschool through college and continuing adult education), resource type (activity, case study, assessment, etc.), subject (math, science, history, education, etc.) and standards (common core, next generation North Dakota English and Math). I searched for science and math activities for upper primary school students, based on common core standards and an inclusive multimedia activity came up about solar energy. Students can read about solar energy on the website, download additional worksheets on the background of solar heat, solar electricity, renewable energy basics and clean energy technologies. Each worksheet has a list of questions to be answered, which could be used as an assessment before students moved onto the next part of the activity.

    The best part is that student can then take what they learned and create a solar oven with step by step construction plans provided on the website. This would be a good group activity, where student read over the information on the website and individually complete the worksheets. Then as a group, they collect the materials they need and complete the solar oven. There is also a list of links, including plans for other solar cookers, so they can choose to make the one provided with the activity or make one of the over 50 other designs. They could also be motivated to complete one on their own, at home, as extra credit.

    There is also an additional activity called the Solar Oven Challenge, hosted by GreenLearning Canada. Here students are challenged to build, test and bake with solar ovens. They can used plans provided by re-energy.ca or design their own. They can compete individually or as whole class, as long as the class is registered by their teacher. All grades are able to participate, and the challenge encourages everyone from science classes to environmental clubs to participate to win prizes and certificates.

  10. I think one of the most useful multimedia resources I found is PBSLearning. There are multiple uses for this source. It has something for all grades and all subjects. There are games, interactive lessons, and review resources. It is a free service offered to teachers and students. For teachers there are lesson plans, lesson ideas, and worksheets that can be printed for use with different kinds of lessons.

  11. A multimedia resource I think I would like to use is a video of the Atlanta native singer Usher singing the abc's on sesame street https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWvBAQf7v8g . I think that this is a very good way to teach your children in your classroom their abc's. The kids get the chance to not only hear and see their letters but also associate a movement with their alphabet too. I would definitely use this as a closure to teaching my kids their alphabet. I believe that this video would really help them understand their letters better.

  12. The multimedia resource that I would use in my classroom is Quizalize. It is a site where you can use quizzes that they already have on the site or you can formulate your own. It turns quizzes into friendly competition games for the students, and it also helps them rehash materials they may need assistance on in any subject. It could also be use as a tool for an assessment, since you are able to monitor their progress and see who is doing exceptionally well and who is struggling. It also lets you assign following up activities to help those who may need a little extra help.

  13. The multimedia resource that I think would be useful for teaching is called Annenberg Learner. This is a site that incorporates interactive learning for students and different resources for teachers to integrate into their lesson plans. Annenberg Learner covers all subjects throughout k-12 and beyond. Using interactive technologies such as, interactive whiteboard and Promethean ActivExpression, I would use this website to come up with a geography lesson plan for 3rd graders. I would use the websites video resources to find an appropriate series for the students to watch on the interactive whiteboard. I would come up with questions and activities from the video and we would use the ActivExpression to test the students on what they watched. I would then look through the interactive games to for my students to play, so that they can understand the lesson better. We would use Promethean ActivExpression devices to play these games as a class or in different groups.

While I was going through different Multimedia resources trying to decide what I would want to use in my future classroom, I decided to use US National Archives to help with different history lesson. Since Multimedia resources can be anything from integrating text, graphics, pictures, powerpoint, videos. It's all about getting the children more involved and interested in the classroom. As a student myself, I know that when I watch video 'm more likely to pay attention to someone or something. One of the video that I really liked watching was the Video about George Washington Carver. It would be a good history lesson, to many review what the children had learned or what they need to remember after the test is over. At the end of the lesson, it could be an awarded to watch these type of videos, to encourage them to want to finish there work.   15. The multimedia resource I think would be helpful would be the Kids Britannica Online Encyclopedia. It has a lot of safe search options and can be used as an alternative to Google. It provides information through text, picture and video to provide a multifaceted approach to reach different learning styles. There is also a choice of three different reading levels to present information so that it caters to younger readers as well as older readers. The only catch is that it is not free but the subscriptions are reasonably priced.

Browse tons of free multimedia resources or subscribe for a membership and pay for even more Multimedia activities that can benefit students, the classroom, schools, and teachers. Multimedia resources and lesson plans, media literacy activities for reading, and every other subject or idea imaginable.

    I have never heard or seen this multimedia resource used or mentioned. I browsed through the free resources for Kindergarten, and I didn't see an end in sight. As much as I have worked in Kindergarten, I am surprised I have not heard of this before.

    Numbers Galore is one resource I would use in my Kindergarten class.

    This pack includes handwriting practice, ten frame examples, even vs. odd, one more, one less, number partners, for each number 0-100.

    I would use this source in a variety of ways going over numbers throughout the year in Kindergarten.

  17. Week 5: Multimedia Resources for Teaching
    There are tons of multimedia resources that are useful when teaching. One that I have found very fun and interesting is Pinterest. I’m sure that most of you are familiar with this awesome resource. I know many teachers who also use this in their classroom. Pinterest is a great place to find lesson plans ideas, activities, and even classroom layout ideas all in one place. I would use Pinterest for many lessons, one may include a life science lesson discussing the life cycle of a butterfly. I would let my students create this fun activity while they learn about the many stages of life that a butterfly endures.

    An oldie but a good website, I would use this multimedia resource in my classroom. It could be used with young children in elementary school, up to students in high school. I would use this resources to take my students to the Outback; where they can Journey with the people and animals of Australia. Or we could go to Mexico and view some of its culture and wildlife. In a classroom with older students we could discuss things on the Front-line: Separated; Children at the Border.
    This would be great resource to use in a classroom, to be able to give the students something visual to look at, and factual information. Engage their curiosity and imagination to encourage learning in a fun way.
