Week 5: Web-Based Apps

Please describe a world wide web 2 application you have used (blog, wiki, podcast, social media).  How did you use it?  Was it for a class, for personal use, etc?  How could it be used in a lesson or unit?

  1. I have used google drive for many of my classes throughout my academic career. Google drive is a tool that works on different devices. Google drive has multiple applications within the drive, and the two I am familiar with is google docs and google slides. This tool is also used as a storage for the google files and information. I used google docs and google slides in different group projects. Google doc is for documents to be shared and google slide is for presentations to be shared. These two are so helpful and manageable because you would put in everyone's email in the group and share it. Then everyone would be able to see what everyone is doing without any hassle everyone has access, and this is the same for google slides as well. The applications can be used in a lesson to show students ways they can interact with their peers if they are not together face to face. Google slides can also be used as a lesson tool it can be used for presentation; it would be an app to add to PowerPoint and Prezi.

    1. The increasing interactivity of the internet has made the term World Wide Web 2 somewhat old-fashioned. It basically just means what we all think of as the internet these days. Applications like the Google suite and other collaborative tools are probably more current than some of the simple wikis and so forth on. It's hard to say exactly what will be the structure of the web in another 12 years. That's why it's so important to resolve to be a lifelong learner of technology if you're a teacher.

  2. I have used Pinterest in my school for various reasons, One we share it as a teacher group from our counselor in different ways that we can intergrate different teaching techniques into our class. Our school counselor finds all of these links and shares them with us through Pinterest, then when we have workshops, we share information from the links she sent us and describe how we used diffeent techniques into our class. Forexample one was allowing students do doodle draw for an lesson, so for science we drew out our lesson of the sun and its path while we read our textbook and went over the lesson, we used our doodles to jot down notes and studied it for our quiz. The majority passed the quiz and the referenced the drawing as being a big help because it helped them visualize the path. Another tool we use at work is Google slides, our secretary has all of our important files, teacher phone numbers, office numbers, sub list, important saved dates, all basically all of the information we need stored on google slides and we can access the slides and get information or update and edit as need be. It's a great source to use and to share so that everyone can see and it always stays updated because we log on regualry and check for changes.

    1. My favorite social media outlet is Pinterest! I am always on and looking for ideas. I have already started a board for education and I am always adding seasonal learning centers and tons of crafts. If I teach older elementary students then I will look for education based pins to help make learning fun. Another social media I use is Instagram. I mainly use that for my personal page and upload pics and follow friends. I am pretty picky and only follow people I actually talk too and my page is also private. Social media was a big distraction for me last year and took a lot of my time away from my family and down time. I was always entertained and found myself on my phone when kids were around instead of interacting with them. I have done a really good job this past year stepping away from the social world and living in my own.

  3. I have used the applications of you tube and Facebook to create a lesson on Math (Division). The students were able to use you tube and look up different ways in the introduction of learning how to do division. Facebook was using to post a live video of the students modeling how they can come up with ways solving math division problems. The students enjoyed using the software to model their work. It showed them there is many ways you can solve math division problems. Technology also has been successfully integrated in curriculum-based and school-based approaches to personalize learning. However, while technology can support student centered learning, technology alone it is not likely to transform traditional learning environments into student-centered ones.

I was introduced to using a blog through this course and have found it to be very easy, beneficial, and fun. I enjoy being able to come together each week and respond on a topic, not only with the section that I am in but with all students enrolled in the course. I get a chance to read their opinions and ideas on the same topic and take away things that I didn’t know and possibly use in the future. Technology is becoming more prevalent in today’s schools, students are growing up with a greater awareness of the variety of uses of technology. A lot of them only knowing a world of technological innovations. As an educator it is imperative to find a safe and secure way to utilize technology in the classroom, and I personally see blogging as that. Blogging allows students to gain a deeper understanding of content they are learning as they synthesize the information. Students love the opportunity to express themselves and blogging allows them to do just that. With blogging students can connect to other students, through discourse students have more of an opportunity to share their opinions. Lastly, blogging teaches students responsibility. As we all know and continue to hammer into our student’s brain to be cautious of what you put on the web because once it is posted it is there forever, no matter if you think you deleted it they rarely listen. However, through blogging students begin to ensure that every fact is accurate and ever comment is appropriate which can carry over to their real lives as well.

  4. I have used google slides for a lot of my classes especially in college. I have used it mainly to collaborate on assignments with people I couldn't meet up with in person. I believe that I would use this application in my classroom in the same way. I'll used it to allow my students to work with each other even when they're not near one another. I think Google slides has made group presentations so much easier to complete. I will definitely use them in my future classroom.

  5. I have used youtube in the classroom many times for sight word videos, number videos, seasonal videos, rhyming words, shapes, colors, etc. I have also used Netflix to watch G rated (administration approved) movies as an award for hitting a goal or for special occasions. These websites are pulled up on the teacher's desktop computer and displayed on the SMART Board. These are in Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms where I work the majority of the time. It is also my favorite place to be! If I a not down that hall, I'm in fifth grade, the total opposite end of the spectrum! For some reason, I would rather be there than first, second, or fourth grade. I also update the school Facebook page as well, to promote school functions and activities on social media.

  6. The web access that I really like to use is Twitter. I started using it in May 2016 after I graduated from college. I thought it would be a very productive way to keep track of a lot of my friends even if we were going different ways. I use twitter for a personal reason, keeping up with people. However, over the years I started to use it as a way to vent or make really corny jokes to get people to enjoy it. I think twitter could be a very productive use in the classroom, because a teacher could ask a question for the class as homework. The students could respond to it and respond to classmates to try to answer the questions. They could also use twitter to create a person in a poem they are reading and maybe quote things they read or ideas they had while they were reading. It could be a way for them to look up news on current websites and even just express themselves. Once time in high school, my teacher wanted us to twitter about the one of the presidential Debate and our opinions while we were watching it. We had to tag other classmates and respond to them as well. - Jamie Bunting

  7. I have used Pinterest for class and personal reasons. It is always just a click away and is full of ideas for a variety of things. There are many educator tools, resources and boards that you can follow or share. One simple search on Pinterest can lead to so many different places. You can even start your own collection of ideas to create a board that you desire. Sometimes, my coworkers and I create boards on Pinterest for Back to school ideas, themes, or Halloween costume ideas. In the classroom, I believe that teachers can share them with students for projects, or even with parents for class parties, or school functions. Many of my new cooking recipes, DIY decor, crafts and holiday cards have come directly from this resource. My only caution would be to limit your time on Pinterest, it is consuming and you can easily forget what you started out looking for!!

  8. I have used a multitude of web applications over the years. My favorite application that I have come across so far is Google Slides. It enables the creation of presentations with unique styling tools, themes, animations, transitions, embedded photos or videos, and fonts that encourage creativity. I really love Google Slides because it permits easy collaboration when working with a group. Multiple students can edit the presentation at the same time and they can chat about the project as well. The best thing about this application is that there is no internet connection needed, so you can work on it wherever you may be. It is simple to save onto your Google Drive, can be downloaded as a PowerPoint, slides from PowerPoint can be imported into the presentation, and once finished it can be quickly uploaded as any type of document needed. I have used Google Slides for three presentations in various classes this past semester and I am starting to favor it over Microsoft PowerPoint. This semester I have used it to create a Science Misconception Presentation on Google Slides and then converted it to PowerPoint for submission. My group for this class used Google Slides when constructing our Ideal Classroom Presentation, and I am in the process of using it to make a Multimedia Presentation about simple machines for my science class project due this upcoming Sunday.

I could use Google Slides for any lesson, subject, concept, or content area being taught. Presentations could be created that align with GSE standards. Learners could utilize this application to create their own presentations. Students can view sample projects or assignments on Google Slides before they are given a topic in which they will have to construct their own project using this application. Grammar and punctuation lessons could be taught where each slide would show a sentence containing an error and students have to figure out what is incorrect. Quizzes or tests could be given with individual questions presented on each slide to ensure students are retaining the information being taught. In this scenario, a student response system would be beneficial as well.

This application could be linked to interactive display technology in order to engage students in discussions while also encouraging student involvement in their own learning. For example, I could use it in a math lesson by constructing a presentation about division on Google Slides and then display it on a SMART board. I would have the steps of division presented within the presentation and then go over a few practice equations with my students. They would be able to interact with the board to solve the problem by showing their work step by step as covered in the presentation. After they learned the correct way to divide numbers, I would go slide by slide into tougher division problems and have them work them out on paper or solve them by interacting with the board again. This is just one of the many ways that Google Slides could be incorporated into my future lessons in class.

  9. In 2008, I opened a Facebook account for personal use right before my oldest son was born. I used it mostly to post pictures of my son for my family and friends to see. Over time, it turned into an online timeline of my family's life and events. I even used a website called www.mysocialbook.com to turn my Facebook posts into a book. My kids love to look at themselves and relive moments from when they were little. As far as a classroom application goes, I think Facebook can be used to create closed groups where students can answer discussion questions, post photos or videos of projects or as a way to contact the teacher with questions. It is also a good opportunity to model good digital citizenship and have students look at real versus fake news to make the connection that not everything online is the truth.

  10. I have used google slides throughout college and my personal life. I used google slides more for college, because of presentations. Before, I used PowerPoint more, because I was more familiar with it. When I started using google Docs, I found that it more useful when doing group projects, because it doesn't need to be sent out to everyone every time it's edited. Everyone involved in the project can see and change things that they want. It keeps everything organized and less complicated. I would use Google Docs to teach my students math. Google Docs provides you with many different visuals like flowcharts and different shapes, such as arrows and circles. It can be used to create an interesting and visual lecture on any math unit. I can also send the Doc out for students to use as a study resource.

  11. Something I have used in my personal life is blogs. I primarily use blogs for my personal enjoyment and pastime, as I love to write some stories. Sometimes, I come across new experiences and learn new things along the way. Therefore, I like to document it, and share with my friends on various social media platforms. Primarily, I used wordpress for my blogs, but I have also had various articles on Odyssey. I think that this could be useful for the classroom as an assignment for students. Posting blogs that pertain to the subject area can be a great way to incorporate technology in the classroom. It could be similar to this assignment, where you give an original post and respond to the classmates. This would be a great tool to get the students writing.

  12. A web based app that I love and use everyday to spark ideas is Pinterest. It is such an incredible resource for teachers. There are tons of creative ideas on about every lesson you could think of and even for classroom organization. I have come across teacher's blogs on Pinterest full of ideas for ways to improve the environment in the classroom. I think it is definitely an app that is beneficial to all teachers.

  13. I have played around with blogs, using WordPress. I liked that it was customizable and there were preset formats, so I didn’t have to make everything from scratch, but I could use to make the blog unique. I don’t think it would work well for the classroom because each student would have to be assigned permission to make posts, which means they could alter the format of the layout, other students posts and other information on the blog. However, I think EduBlog, which is powered by WordPress, would be great in the classroom. Students can use the blog to post on topics, like we do in this class. What I think would be a great idea is using the blog for the end of a unit, having groups or individual students post outlines of specific sections, creating an online study guide. I could use it to review students’ knowledge of the unit before a test, review materials and make corrections, then go over anything I think students are struggling with. In the end, students could use it as a comprehensive study guide to prepare for the unit test.

I also use social media for personal and professional use (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn). But I haven’t found a way to really integrate that into a classroom. I have seen examples of it in the textbook, but I feel like social media would be a distraction in the classroom. The textbook had a great idea, to use apps that mimicked social media, like Facebook, to engage students. But I think Google Classroom has online discussion boards and other options that keep students focused in the classroom and achieve the same goals.
